(2026) Sometimes it feels like a new song has come to me from somewhere else. This is one of them. It's a familiar tale: An aging woman is watching and feeling her days come and go. Wondering when. Lyrics for the verses were written before I started singing the name Lorelei out of the blue. When I googled the name, the whole song made sense. Listen first, then look her up.

What If

I often sing in the morning when my mind is quiet, a little foggy and not yet full of endless busy-ness. What I sing is random and mostly forgotten. But every now and then a melody sticks. This is one of those. (2025)

I wrote the piano part for this song years before I recorded it, but I didn't know what to do with it. Eventually, I asked Tony Levin 3000 miles away if he'd record a bass part for the song, hoping whatever he did would inspire me to finish it. He did, and of course I loved it, but I still didn’t know what to do with it. By then, I had a vocal melody, but no idea what I wanted to say with the lyrics. Two years went by. Frustrated and impatient, I asked my friend John Alan to take my piano and Tony's bass and use our tracks to write his own song. It was as an experiment I’d always wanted to try, and here was the opportunity. How would John’s song, and the song I would eventually write, turn out with both of us using the very same backing tracks? Would they be entirely different (yes) and would John’s song inspire me to get mine done? (yes). John wrote and recorded his song in a few weeks. As soon as I heard his, mine started coming to life. It took me another few months, but it’s finally done. I’m grateful for Tony Levin (bass) and Robby Berman (keyboards, mix, and mastering engineer), and especially, for John Alan. If you’re curious, you can hear his version of “Fly” wherever you listen to music.

(2022) When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, I needed to express my sadness but I couldn't find words for the profound upset it was causing and how much I wished I could just stop it all and turn back the clock to more peaceful days. This song was the result of that longing. I asked friends from around the country to join me. Those singers were: Elly Wininger, Dan Ryker, Julie Last, Jay Hogan, Layonne Holmes, Cindy Graff, Kirsti Gholson, and Valerie Ghent

(2023) I wrote and recorded this song a year ago for friends who were getting married. They had been high-school sweethearts who hadn't seen one another for over thirty years when they met again at a reunion. Carol Sharar (violin) wrote the string arrangement for this version. She's joined by Loni Bach on cello. Rave Tesar recorded the strings in NJ; I recorded the piano and vocal in my home studio in Oregon.

(2023) The Current is the first song in a long while for which I recorded all the tracks in my home studio. It's a commentary on the current state of of our world, and a step into relatively new lyrical territory for me. Mixed and mastered by Rave Tesar.

We all know "The Star Spangled Banner" and have our own relationship with it depending on where we heard or sang it first, and all the ways we've heard it since. When the pianist Jay Hogan asked me to sing his new arrangement, I said yes, but also told him I wasn't the song's biggest fan. It's a hard one to sing, first of all, but it also puts bombs and rockets at the center of our national identity. My preference would have been to put our beauty, our generosity, and our big hearts in that space instead. But as I learned the song -- researched its history, read additional verses, and did the homework that goes into recording a song -- I came to respect it. Singing it this way has opened my eyes to its power.
